The Saints of Latter Days

It was nice an quiet (!) finally in my house and kid's bedroom got silent. They are asleep, like little soldiers after numerous battles

I grabbed a book of my favourite author ever, Sergey Nilus. I've been surching internet to find his books translated into English, and no luck whatsoever. Only one would pop up every now and then, "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and that's it. The book I read (and which I can not find) are full of very inspirational stories of lives of simple Orthodox christians, who lived way over hundred years ago. The faith discribed there is so strong and a lot of times child-like, it simply moves your heart. I used to have all 6 books here at home, but I shipped 4 of them back to Russia to my father. Obviously these books are very rare there too And I did buy the replacement set about 6 weeks ago, but it is still travelling somewhere between Russia and America... Hopefully it will make it...soon...

But anyway. I translated one of the stories from the book about Russian monastics, which I really tried to translate the name of the book itself but this is one of the examples of the great and beautiful Russian language...  Even my brilliant husband (I surely hope he'd read this post, I don't call him "brilliant" too often) and his Thesaurus did not do the job. The name should sound something like "Shrine under pressure"... The below dialog is between Rev.Georgiy and his spiritual father Blessed Nifont of Optina, and it took place, my best guess early 19th century. Read and let me know what you think...

-         I would also ask you, Father! – said Ven.Grigoriy to the Blessed Nifont, - reveal to me: are there any holy ascetic of God left on the face of the Earth, who would shine with their virtue, like Angels, and be like Anthony the Great, Illarion, Paul and many others?

And the Blessed one answered:

-         My son! There will be Saints until the end of times, but in the latter years they will hide from people and be pleasing God in such humbleness of mind, that they would appear in the Kingdom of Heaven higher than the first miracle working Fathers. And this eternal award will be given to them because in their times there won’t  be anyone before them who would perform miracles, and people would  take the zeal  and the fear of God upon their hearts by themselves. The Archpriesthood will be very poor and won’t love wisdom and truth and would worry about their wealth only. And monks would be like them, owners of great estates. Their spiritual vision will dull and those, who love God with all their heart, would be greatly neglected by them; and the love of money would rule with great power amongst them. But woe unto those monks; they won’t see the Kingdom of God! Both “black” and “novice”, who give their gold to grow, if they don’t leave this evil soon, will be called usurers here and their prayer will not be accepted, and fasting be in vain, an sacrifice for God and alms giving – all turn into abomination and profanation. They would go by wide road. But I don’t want to talk much about them, because I myself from my youth till my old days did not take an effort towards my own salvation.
But you must know that every evil will multiply from not knowing the Scripture….
