Meekness is Necessary
Let your moderation be known to all men.
The Lord is at hand (Phil.4, 5)
A lot of Christians do not consider meekness a necessary virtue, considering it to be an external feature. They say, if the fruit is sweet, what difference does it make if tree bark is rough? What meaning do sharp words have if we know that there is a good heart hidden under them, as well as clear conscience and honorable motives?
However Apostle Paul, who himself was an impetuous and hot-tempered person, tells in almost every of his epistles about necessity of meekness in all of our feelings and actions. This is exterior you say - ok. But we influence others with it. Therefore Apostle Paul wants our meekness to “be known to all men”, so that it was our distinctive feature in the same manner as the Savior points out to love, that His followers are distinguished by: “By this shall all man know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another” (Jn.13, 35)
Let us also remember that “Lord is at hand”. And by remembering his presence, being filled with a spirit of meekness, let us be afraid to insult the Savior by a sharp word. Let our meekness not only be an exterior feature, but also an expression of our internal peace, which is in every true Christian.
